Which of the following photographic features/equipment have you used on a camera before?

Feature
Yes

Comments if yes – where have you completed this skills and to what level
Manual Focus features

X

Shutter Speed
X

I used this at the beginning of the year when I was learning all about the features. This feature is quite useful as it allowed me to capture moving images.
Aperture control

X

ISO Control

X

A tripod
X

I used this at the beginning of the year, as well as when I came back to help out with opening evening. This is very useful as it allows you to capture the image straight, instead of you trying to make it look straight. I also found out how to set it up.

X

Self timer facility

X

Light meter
X

I used this to get the perfect light setting, this is very useful as it automatically sets the lighting for you.
Composition grids

Photoshop Skills
Which of the following features of Photoshop have you used before?

Feature
Yes
No
Comments if yes – where have you completed this skills and to what level
Have you aver used Photoshop ever before?
X

I briefly used Photoshop in my old school to design a poster for my art project, I only really used it a couple of time so I wasn’t that familiar with the software.

Text control
X

I used text control for my final product in which I used quite a bit, I did this because I designed a magazine and a double page spread so this allowed me to make my product look like a professional magazine in terms of the way my text was laid out.
Filters

X

Brushes

X

Layers
X

I used layers when I was working on my magazine front cover; this allowed me to have as many different layers so that I could edit them and add or take away stuff. I thought this was quite effective as it allowed me to hide things that I completed, which made it easier for me know what I had left to do.
Opacity control
X

I used this for my final product. I used this because one of the shapes H had made was cover my photo, so I changed the opacity of it so that I could still see the image underneath. I think this effect worked quite well as it allowed me someone to write as well as allowing me to show the image underneath.
Shape creation
X

I used this to create shapes for my magazine. I wanted to create some shapes which were on the front of a football magazine; this allowed me to make my own up in a football format. I also used this to create my banners, and to create a frame-like image for my double page spread.
Brightness and contrast control

X

Gradients

X

Load selection features

X

Feathering

X

Colour curves adjustment

X

Resolution setting control
X

I used this on my double page spread because when I put my front cover in, the pixels went blurry, so by using the resolution control it allowed me to get rid of the blurriness. This was quite effective as it allowed you to read my magazine article.
Magnetic lasso, polygon lasso tool

X

Cropping tool
X

I used this to crop the images I needed, without having any other imagery that I didn’t need. This was quite effective as it made it look tidier and it saved me quite a bit of time.
Clone tool
X

I used the clone tool in some of my magazine cover, this was to make the background all of the same colour. I quite liked using this tool, and it was quite simple to use. This worked quite effectively as it made it look neat as well as saving me time from copying and pasting.

Final Magazine

I chose to make my magazine look like a football one as when I was doing my research I noticed that males weren’t fully aware of how recycling helped and that no males recycled. By mixing football and recycling together it allowed me to target males of the ages of 16-19. By looking at a football magazines layout I established a bond with mine and a ‘match of the day’ magazine. I think that my layout and front cover do resemble a football magazine, so this enabled me to target my audience. I also made my article have a football theme to it by setting it out in a football format such as the ‘stat attack, formation and tactics zone’ this allowed me to make the magazine look exactly how a football magazine, therefore, completing my goals as I managed to link football and recycling together.

Front Cover

I was trying to make my front cover look like a football magazine; I used the image to represent the 1966 world cup final in which I was doing a parody of. Like I did with my double page spread, I set everything out roughly so that I knew what I wanted to put in and where at.

In-Design

When I was doing my double page spread I was trying to get it to resemble a football magazine, so I bought a ‘match of the day’ magazine and looked at the layout of it which enabled me to make my double page spread resemble one. This image above is what I created within the first week of editing it, I set everything out so that I knew where everything needed to go.

Fonts

GUNPLAY
Universal jack
OLD NEWSPAPER TYPES
I went onto http://www.dafont.com/ to see what fonts they had. After I had selected what fonts I wanted I then downloaded them.
I chose these fonts because I thought they suited my magazine. The ‘GUNPLAY’ font was used for my tag lines; I did this because I thought it stood out and grabbed the reader’s attentions. The ‘UNIVERSAL JACK’ was used for my magazine name which was Universal, I thought this was quite suited to my name as it looked quite like what I was looking for, I wanted it to make my magazine stand out. I used the ‘OLD NEWSPAPER TYPES’ font because I based my magazine on the 1966 world cup final and this font made it seem like from that timeline as it was quite similar to fonts which were used back then.

Production

5th April.

Progress:
I have pretty much finished everything now, I only have the odd bit to change on my cover and in-design layout and then I can fully concentrate on writing my article and putting it into a football format. Also this week I got my print audit and the advantages and disadvantages table to do, I decided to concentrate on my article in lessons and do these sheets at home as I thought I would be able to concentrate more at home than in lesson.

Targets:
I targeted to have my entire unit 3 products complete by next week so that I could fill in my evaluation sheets as I was running out of time. I still had my blogs to do which were increasing pressure on me, as I had quite a few to do.

Contingencies:
If I don’t manage to finish off my article this week then this will push me behind schedule even more which pushed pressure onto me, making me think I was going to fail. I set out to make sure that my product was finished as well as making sure my blogs were coming along nicely so that I didn’t have as much pressure on my shoulders when it came down to doing my evaluations, if I don’t get this accomplished then it is more than likely than I will lose quite a few marks in my unit 2 as I won’t get my blogs finished as well as losing marks on my unit 3 products.

Production

29th March.

Progress:
This week I managed to get most of my front cover done, I based it on a ‘match of the day’ magazine as I was linking recycling with Global Warming. I managed to get all of my coursework done, as well as doing my unit 2 changed, which pretty much allowed me to focus on my unit 3 product. However, I decided to change the whole layout of my magazine because I didn’t like it and I didn’t think it symbolised a football magazine, as I did this, it left me quite a bit behind on focusing on my article. I was trying to get everything finished for this week in terms of the design of my magazine and in-design so that next week I could write my article.
As I was designing my in-design layout I picked up a few skills and familiarised myself with it, as well as learning new skills in Photoshop.

Targets:
Mt targets were to accomplish finishing my magazine cover as well as the designing stage of my in-design layout so that I could concentrate on my article. I was targeting to better myself so that I finished my product so that I could concentrate on my blogs next week as I fell behind on them and had quite a few bits to do.

Contingencies:
Some problems which I may encounter are that I might not get my magazine cover or in-design layout finished which means I would only have a week to do my articles as well as my blogs, in case of this happening then I would have to start giving more and concentrating more as I would end up losing quite a few marks in terms of my blog. Also I may end up losing my actual magazine cover and layout, so it is vital that I have back-ups of them on my memory stick and computer at home, even though I have three back-ups I decided to send them to my e-mail address as you never know all three technologies could brake and then I would fail my course.

22nd March.

Progress:
I managed to get my photo shoot done this week, which allowed me to start getting on with my front cover, however, whilst in my photo shoot I realised that one of the tops didn’t fit my model, but he decided it was ok just for the photo shoot, because of this it saved me a lot of time trying to find another top. I had also managed to pick the fonts that I wanted to use, as well as making progress with the actual layout of my magazine. I bought a ‘match of the day’ football magazine which allowed me to look and see the layout and how everything was within a popular football magazine. I also managed to complete all of my coursework which meant that I had the foundations ready for my magazine front cover; such as the actual rationale and flat plan which were the basis of my idea.
As I was doing my magazine front cover I managed to familiarise myself with Photoshop and progressed quite well in terms of how I handled everything, I think I picked up some valuable skills which would help me with future products.

Targets:
My targets for this week were to make sure I had all of my sell lines and tag lines ready which meant coming up with suitable headlines and make sure the fonts went; I also had to try and link this with my football theme. I had also planned on getting most of my magazine cover finished to enable me to fully concentrate on writing my article in the following weeks. I want to familiarise myself with in-design as I am not fully comfortable with it as much as I am with Photoshop.

Contingencies:
In the coming weeks I have to make sure that my magazine front cover as well as my in-design layout is up to an acceptable standard, so that I can fully concentrate on magazine article. However, I may not be able to accomplish this as I have been behind my planned schedule which means I probably won’t be able to spend as much time on my article as I want, if this happens then I will be giving up more of my spare time and coming back top media at dinners and after college as well as using my free lesson to make sure I catch up to my planned schedule.

Production

15th  March.

Progress:
I had a few little bits of my unit 3 coursework to complete, so I was still concentrating on getting it finished to the best of my ability. I didn’t really want to be concentrating on my coursework at this time as it didn’t give me as much time to concentrate on my practical as much as I would of liked to.
I also tried to get my photo shoot done this week but it wasn’t available for the day that i wanted it which meant I had to book it for next week, I wasn’t really sure that this allowed me enough time, however, because of this it allowed me to complete all unit 3 coursework as well do any changed to unit 2 that I had to do which meant that I could fully concentrate on my magazine cover and in-design stuff for 2 weeks.

Targets:
I targeted to make sure that I had finished all of my coursework so that I had enough time to finish off my final product. I also had to make sure that everything was in line and ready for next week’s photo shoot, as I couldn’t get it on the day I wanted it, a couple of my said they couldn’t do it, which left me quite a problem as it meant trying to find someone, which I already had lined up, but I didn’t have an England football top for him, because of this it left me thinking that I couldn’t go with my football parody, I had the weekend to sort everything. I was still waiting for my Globe to come as well, however, I had already organised a ‘stand-in’ Globe ready in case mine didn’t come.

Contingencies:
As stated in my targets, I had to find someone to be a back-up as some of my models couldn’t do my photo shoot as they were unavailable when I have my photo shoot booked for, this was a real inconvenience as it meant trying to find another football top with such short notice, however, I managed to get hold of one, it was just a matter of if it would fit my model. I wouldn’t know the answer to this until the actual photo shoot as my model was too busy to try it on.

Production

8th March.

Progress:
Some of the things I achieved last week were pre production. This allowed me to discover an idea for my magazine cover and article. I did things such as draw out two flat plans which meant coming up with two ideas and choosing the best one for me, this also allowed me to add bits or take bits away from my idea to improve it.
I planned on finishing all of my unit 3 coursework, however, I didn’t get all of it finished as I had coursework in other lessons to complete too, because of this I am behind my schedule which means I am playing catch up.
I complete my mood board and most of my treatment, although I need to see someone about certain bits as I didn’t know how to fill it in properly.
I tried to book the studio but it wasn’t available on the date I wanted it so I didn’t book it, I also managed to order an antique globe which would fit with my final idea.

Targets:
Work I have scheduled to do this week is finish off all my coursework and do any changed to the other units that I have. If I complete my targets then this would allow me to fully concentrate on progressing my final unit 3 piece, after I manage to get my photos. I’m also planning on doing a bit of research into my idea, such as recycling, seeing what people can do and how it affects Global Warming. As I’m planning on linking recycling with a football theme, I am also planning on looking through some football magazines to see if i can think of a layout and a format to fit my product together.

Contingencies:
Taking in to consideration what I have to do then I may not manage to get all of my coursework completed so this could put me behind schedule, in case of this happening then I will be using all of my frees and going back to media at dinner as well as doing the work at home, which hopefully will allow me to complete the work. Also, another problem could be in the terms of my antique globe, which may not come in time, if this happens then I will have to ask to borrow one from either someone in my class or a friend who has one, I have already asked someone in my class and he said I could borrow his so this problem won’t cause too much of an inconvenience.
